Current veterinary behavioral medicine has a myriad of options for psychopharmacologic intervention with patients. These fall in a number of drug classes including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, benzodiazepines, and atypical antidepressants to name a few. Navigating all the choices can be daunting. In this lecture set, we will cover the most commonly used classes of medications and discuss indications and contraindications for classes as well as individual medications. Information presented is based on data from the literature as well as clinical experience.
